Walking for Weightloss

We all know the glories and praises of walking, but what do you do when walking is already part of your routine and you want to increase your calorie burn safely?

Here are some tips to burning more while walking if you've been walking for over 6 months:

  1. Add hills or stairs, going up on an incline. If you are walking a normal speed, about 3 MPH, you burn about 4 calories per minute. By Adding hills you can burn roughly  (depending on weight)  6.5 calories per minute. By Adding stairs you can burn roughly (depending on weight) 8 calories per minute. The resistance makes a big difference, embrace the thigh burn!
  2. Add a few speed intervals, If you want to spring for a minute every few minutes go for it but simply increasing speed from 3MPH to 4MPH for a designated length or time can be beneficial, it allows you to get more distance in for an allotted time.
  3. Make sure your arms are positioned like "L" when youre walking but don't clinch your hands into fists, keep your hands flat like you're going to do a High 5.
These are some additional tips to burning calories in addition to walking to lose the poundage faster.
  1. Adding some strength training to these areas is great because they are the largest muscle groups building muscles in these areas reap more rewards: Thighs, Abs, Chest, and Arms. Yep, that's right, it's not just the legs. Do some light strength training in these areas a few times a week to balance out your muscle tone and lose weight while you sleep! 2. Drink Caffeinated Green or Black Tea, 250 mg of caffeine can increase calories spent metabolizing during a meal by 10%. This could mean 75 calories a day burned, doesn't seem like a lot but over the course of a month that could be a lb lost right there. Try to avoid sodas though since these are filled with other things not so great for you. Bonus most teas have 0 calories and there is still flavor. Never tried tea? Nervous? Check out Tazo's Tea Tasting Guide to match you up with a kind you are more likely to enjoy. You'll want to choose the kinds that are rated 5/5 dots for caffeine (these have 61+ mg of caffeine in a cup). I prefer Organic Earl grey Blanc and Berry Trifle.
  3. Still drink your 8 cups of H20 though because the digestion of water may help to burn up to 100 calories a day which can give a pound per month. Bottoms up!
